About Us

Who we are, what we do, and why we built the best free lawn fertilizer calculator on the web.

Our Mission

At LawnFertilizerCalculator.com, our mission is simple: help every homeowner, gardener, and landscaping professional apply exactly the right amount of fertilizer โ€” no more, no less. Over-fertilizing wastes money, burns grass, and harms local waterways. Under-fertilizing leaves lawns thin, yellow, and vulnerable to weeds and disease.

We built this free tool because we found that most lawn fertilizer calculators online were either too complex (designed for agronomists) or too simplistic (ignoring grass types, NPK ratios, and seasonal timing). We wanted something that combined university-backed science with everyday usability.

How We Calculate

Our calculator uses the standard university extension formula for fertilizer rate calculation:

Core Formula (University of Missouri Extension): Fertilizer (lbs) = (Desired N lbs per 1,000 sq ft รท N%) ร— (Total Area sq ft รท 1,000)

Nitrogen rate recommendations by grass type are sourced from Purdue University Turfgrass Science and the respective state cooperative extension services. Seasonal timing recommendations are based on peer-reviewed turf management literature.

We support three area units (square feet, acres, and square meters) and provide cost estimates, bag counts, NPK breakdowns, and month-by-month application schedules tailored to grass type.
